My Journey
My food health journey started during nursing school. Nutrition and preventative health were given limited instruction time. Oddly enough, the longer I spent in the western medicine field, the more I discovered many diseases and health struggles that can be prevented with simple lifestyle changes.
Shortly after graduating, I was introduced to the benefits of a plant-based lifestyle. This really appealed to me on a number of levels, and I was successful with it for a few years. However, in the long run, it didn’t completely fit the needs of our family as a whole. I knew there had to be some historically and scientifically supported way to accomplish several things. One, enjoy healthy food! Two, heal the body and gut. Three, preserve foods in a way that retains the benefits and nutrients! After a lot of trial and error, and some help from very knowledgeable people, I discovered traditional fermentation!
Fun Facts About Me
- High school and college activities included lifeguarding, teaching swimming and piano, and singing opera/chorale works.
- My husband and I have three wonderful children who keep life busy and exciting!
- If you walk into our home you’ll find 1-5 different ferments brewing in some hidden corner, and a fridge full of others waiting to finish fermenting. And half the time I miscalculate and have “exploded” sourdough, brine, or veggie ferments all over the place. Dosa is the biggest culprit!
- My dream is to have a little farm house complete with chickens, goats, and a very big garden for all my fermenting! Plus fruit trees. Lots of fruit trees.
- And speaking of trees…I literally have a tree on my wall full of essential oils.
